Thompson Island, Boston Harbor Islands Interpretive Signs

Thompson Island, originally occupied by Native Americans, hosted a trading post, a farm, and from the 1830s through 1975 it was home to a succession of schools. Most prominent and long lasting was a school for indigent boys that operated from 1835 until the mid-1950s. Thompson Island Outward Bound Education Center, providing thousands of children and adults with a variety of programs, is the current occupant of the island. Design Division conducted primary research, including photo research, and developed a comprehensive system of interpretive and directional signs distributed throughout the island.
